The Shell of Sense

The Real Dream Cabaret is presenting The Shell of Sense at Rust Belt Books in Allentown over the next four weekends. Due to some non-theatrical drama in my personal life, I won’t be involved with this production, which basically means the quality of the show will be higher than usual. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 9:00 p.m. and admission is your hourly wage. For details visit www. realdreamcabaret.com.

Polonia

A friend invited me to Corpus Christi Church’s annual Polish Harvest Festival. My initial reaction was confusion - why would an Italian-American agnostic want to attend a Polish-American Catholic festival? That’s crazy talk! But something short-circuited inside my head and even though I was thinking “NO!” I found myself saying “sure, why not?”

Naturally, I got lost on the way. Not quite as bad as the time I crossed into Pennsylvania while driving to Ellicottville for a business meeting, but close. I started off at the wrong East Side Polish church (St. Stan’s) and made a quick detour into Cheektowaga before finally finding Corpus Christi. I arrived just in time to eavesdrop on the tail end of the church tour, which was a treat, then ventured outside into the Festival itself, which featured food, drink, a Chinese auction, and a very popular mini-petting zoo hosted by staff from the Buffalo Zoo. Then, the Pic-A-Polka Band took the stage and things really heated up, delighting everyone from children (above) to grandparents.

“Alive” Night!

“Alive Night” Party on Friday August 11th at 7PM at Arty’s Grill and Tavern at 508 Peckham St. and Memorial Dr. (at the foot of the Central Terminal) The good folks at Broadway Fillmore Alive and Arty’s Grill (508 Peckham St. at Memorial Drive) would like to cordially invite you to share some good times with them at their first planned social gathering of the summer! There are many things that symbolize the special feeling that IS Broadway Fillmore Alive: the grassroots revitalization efforts of Corpus Christi and St. Stanislaus churches and the Central Terminal, to name just a few. These efforts are fueled by the perseverance of neighbors, former neighbors and people from elsewhere in the region who just care enough about the area and its people to come and help out. Arty’s is the perfect place to celebrate these efforts, as it has been a neighborhood cornerstone for more than three decades and welcomes any and all visitors with friendly smiles, great times and inexpensive drinks. It truly is a place “where everybody knows your name”! So, come on out and join us, celebrate summer in an historic neighborhood and experience some of the goodness that we all cherish in the Broadway Fillmore area. You’ll have a great time and want to come back for more! For directions and more information, please visit our website at www.broadwayfillmorealive.org. Broadway Fillmore Alive is a group of concerned citizens whose goal is to work together with community groups, businesses, residents, churches and other organizations to help promote, preserve and revitalize the Broadway-Fillmore area.

It’s raining outside with no end in sight until tomorrow morning. It’s the perfect day to get in your car and head over to the Terminal, especially if you’ve never been there. It’s a brilliantly beautiful building…

Next Tuesday, July 18, 7 PM, there will be a presentation on moving the Bicycle Museum (currently in O.P.) to the Inner Harbor. It seems like a really cool idea and there is a design already for what the building might look like.

The presentation will be held at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, located at 25 Nottingham Terrace. There will be a question and answer period following the presentation.
