Simon Cowell made an interesting comment last night on “American Idol” and it made me think of Buffalo. Yes, I watch Idol. I watch it because I’m a musician and singer - and believe me sometimes it’s painful - and of course I watch it because it’s amusing.

Now to my point. One of the contestants in Philly who made it through to Hollywood went out into the waiting area and you could hear the joy of his family and friends. Simon made a comment along the lines of “people in America are genuinely happy for each other. When good things happen they want to share it with one another.” And from his tone, he was truly surprised by that.

Buffalo is a town filled with people who genuinely care for one another and who are really happy for one another. I feel extraordinarily lucky to have so many friends and family that share in my joys and support me in my disappointments. I think the city of good neighbors is an understatement.

A friend forwarded this to me and I’d say it’s pretty true of Buffalonians:

>FRIENDS: Never ask for food.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Always bring the food.
>FRIENDS: Will say “hello”.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Will give you a big hug and a kiss.
>FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. and Mrs.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Call your parents Mom and Dad
>FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Cry with you.
>FRIENDS: Will eat at your dinner table and leave.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Will spend hours there, talking, laughing and just being together, and then clean up.
>FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.
>FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that’s what the crowd is doing.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Will kick the whole crowds’ ass’s that left you.
>FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, “I’m home!”
>FRIENDS: Are for a while.
>BUFFALO FRIENDS: Are for life.

Feel free to share…I did!

Museum Hosts New York City-Based Photographer Michael L. Horowitz’s Cathedrals of Industry

Buffalo, N.Y. – Jan. 15, 2008 – Imagine a time when Buffalo was the second largest transportation hub and one of the largest industrial centers in the United States. Such was the case in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Colonel Ward Pumping Station’s massive four-storey steam engines pumped billions of gallons of water from Lake Erie each year, while dozens of towering grain elevators bustled with activity along the Buffalo River and Ship Canal. Today, the steam engines loom mute alongside newer, smaller electric motors and most of the remaining elevators stand dormant in ghostly testament to Buffalo’s glorious past.

The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society will present an exhibit of large-scale photographs of the present-day interiors of these structures in its museum, located at 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo. Cathedrals of Industry: Photographs by Michael L. Horowitz will run in two parts, featuring images from the pumping station from Feb. 2, 2008 to July 25, 2008 and photos from the grain elevators from Aug. 8, 2008 to Jan. 25, 2009.

Horowitz, based in New York City, gained rare access into the pumping station through assistance from New York State Assemblymember Sam Hoyt and the Lake and Rail Grain Elevator from RiverWright Energy co-founder Rick Smith III – and the results are breathtaking. His 40 by 60 inch photographs will be set low to the floor, creating the illusion of walking into these structures and enabling visitors to discover and explore the hidden cores of buildings that were once at the heart of Buffalo’s rise to industrial power.

Throughout his life, Horowitz has been drawn to buildings on the brink of extinction. In his teens, he photographed the decomposition and demolition of New York City’s South Street Seaport and West Side Piers. He later captured the Italian city of Assisi on film shortly before an earthquake devastated the town and its ornate cathedral in 1997.

Struck by the impermanence of architecture, destroyed or discarded by the hand of man or nature, Horowitz turned to photography, as he put it, to “document and preserve cultural history even as – and precisely because – it vanishes right before our eyes.” His photos from Cathedrals of Industry will help the Historical Society maintain the stories of the Colonel Ward Pumping Station and the grain elevators for generations to come.

Cathedrals of Industry: Photographs by Michael L. Horowitz is included in general admission and will be on view during regular museum hours. For more information, the public may contact the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society at (716) 873-9644 ext. 301.

Museum Hours:
Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday Noon to 5 p.m.
Adults $6.00

The Historical Society’s Museum Shop will carry 24 by 36 inch fine art giclée prints of several of the Cathedrals of Industry images, as well as the book Reconsidering Concrete Atlantis: Buffalo’s Grain Elevators, edited by Lynda Schneekloth, which discusses the historical significance of the elevators and their potential adaptive reuses. Museum admission is not required to visit the Museum Shop.

Buffalo-based bands Brian Wheat & Groggy Darlin’, Shambu, and Vinnie DeRosa and Day Go Love will perform on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10:00 p.m. at Nietzsche?s, 248 Allen St. in Buffalo.

Alt.country songsmith (and Gasport native) Brian Wheat was named “Best Solo Artist” by Buffalo Spree magazine in 2007. His finely-crafted songs and evocative delivery have garnered him supporting positions for some of today’s most exciting national and international acoustic artists, including Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon), Hamell on Trial (Righteous Babe Records), and David Dondero (Team Love). His band, Groggy Darlin’, features a veritable who’s who of the Western New York music scene, including bassist Peter Williams, multi-instrumentalist Peter Gerace, and drummer Mark Longolucco. Check him out here.

Shambu performs textured indiepop in the vein of The Decemberists, The Shins, and Death Cab For Cutie. The band, which includes guitarist/vocalist Peter Burakowski, multi-instrumentalist Dan Reitz, bassist Mike Milazzo, and drummer Brian Dziewa, will reprise its four-song song cycle committed to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition and the assassination of Pres. William McKinley, first performed on the anniversary of McKinley’s death, last September. The band will be joined by special guests Ange Sciarino (French horn) and Jonathan Filbert (trumpet). Check them out here.

With a vocal presence that ranges from soaring tenderness to impassioned grittiness, Vinnie DeRosa offers sincere, convincing soul a la Bill Withers. He will perform with support from his newly-formed band, Day Go Love. Check them out here.

LAST CHANCE FOR MILTON ROGOVIN EXHIBIT AT BUFFALO AND ERIE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Exhibit of Images by Internationally Recognized Photographer Closes Jan. 13, 2008

Buffalo, N.Y. – Jan. 8, 2008 – The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society’s popular exhibit of photographs by internationally recognized social documentary photographer Milton Rogovin will close this Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. The exhibit, titled Milton Rogovin: Native American Series, 1963 – 2002, is on display in the Historical Society museum, located at 25 Nottingham Court at Elmwood Avenue.

The exhibit includes striking images of Iroquois communities throughout upstate New York, Canada, and Buffalo’s Lower West Side. Rogovin’s black and white photographs capture a cross section of Native Americans, young and old, urban and rural, in varied settings, including psychedelic rock and roll culture, an Iroquois social gathering and weathered reservation buildings.

Rogovin has described himself as a photographer of “the forgotten ones.” Subjects of his work have included the struggle of miners in ten countries, the decline of Buffalo and Lackawanna’s once-mighty steel industry, Yemeni families in Lackawanna, and the movement of the Spirit in store-front churches on Buffalo’s East Side.

Born in New York City in 1909, Rogovin moved to Buffalo in 1938 and opened an optometric practice. He became active in Buffalo’s communist party, which led to a hearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952 and the Buffalo News branding him “Buffalo’s Top Red.” Despite the devastating effects of a public blacklisting, Rogovin refused to be silenced and, instead, turned to photography to give a greater voice to the cause of the working class. Rogovin’s work is included in the Library of Congress, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona.

Milton Rogovin: Native American Series, 1963-2002 is included in museum admission, which is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students ages 13 to 21, $2.50 for children ages 7 to 12, and free for children age 6 and younger. For more information, the public may call the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society at (716) 873-9644 ext. 301.

*According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Buffalo region (Erie & Niagara County) ranks in the upper third nationally for job growth. The region added 2,100 jobs during the past 12 months. Buffalo ranked 124 out of 367 labor markets.

*Construction projects for the year are down 8% in Erie and Niagara Counties for 2007 as compared to 2006 due to a slow start to the year.
*Wilson Farms has selected Buffalo based Tripifoods as its new wholesale distributor. Tripifoods provides distribution services in eight states, delivering products to more than 3,400 locations. Tripifoods expects to create 60 new jobs to handle the Wilson Farms business. Wilson Farms was previously using a distributor based in Texas.

*Kittinger Furniture is doubling in size by moving to a new 6,000 square foot retail showroom on Transit Road. The company was located in smaller space in Cheektowaga. The company design center is located at the Tri-Main Center in Buffalo. Kittinger has a worldwide reputation for high quality furniture associated with Buffalo.

Did You Know?
By Paul Wolf, Esq.

*Christopher Jacobs of Avalon Development who currently owns 721, 723, and 737
Main Street has acquired a vacant two-story structure located at 741 Main Street,
along with a one-story building behind it on Washington Street. Full Circle Studios
a growing media company which currently employs 14 will be taking 7,000 square feet
of space at 741 Main Street, creating what will be the largest sound studio in
Buffalo.

*The $65 million overhaul of the Dulski Federal Office Building on Delaware and
West Huron by Acquest Development is moving forward with the announcement that the
building will be home to a new 150-room Embassy Suites Hotel.

*Savarino Construction has been retained by local investors to construct a new $10
million, multi-tenant office building at the corner of Main & Dodge. The building
consisting of two-stories and 30,000 square feet already has two tenants about to
sign leases for 10,000 square feet of space. The site currently is home to the
Buffalo Tourist Lodge.

*While we have lost population from the Buffalo area it is interesting to note
that according to a Business First analysis of IRS data in 2005-06, 1,108 people
moved from Florida to WNY, a group that included young people and retirees who
returned home after experiencing Southern living.

As part of the FBI Citizens’ Academy, we had the opportunity to see FBI Buffalo’s finest in action. Last Friday, we gathered at the Tonawanda Sportsmens Club in Pendleton. We were privy to a bomb diffusion demonstration. We were also lucky enough to witness a mock SWAT hostage rescue negotiation…$11 million helicopter flown in from FBI HQ in D.C. to boot. It was all very cool stuff.

The part about shooting? They had 5 different weapons that we had the opportunity to shoot. I opted to shoot a Glock 9 pistol (the standard pistol of FBI Special Agents) and an M-14. The pistol? I did pretty well. The M-14? I did okay until it switched to automatic…then it was just like in the movies…

Gave you an appreciation for what the FBI does…and makes those tax dollars a little easier to swallow. Tried to attach my target so you can see, but alas…not working…

The Addams Family. Black cats wandering the streets. A full moon casting an eerie light on the turrets and gargoyles of a dark mansion. Ghosts of former cemeteries rising up to haunt the houses built atop their gravesites. October and Halloween bring thoughts of the supernatural to mind. This year, the Allentown Association has teamed with noted author and paranormal expert Mason Winfield to bring these thoughts to life with the first-ever Haunted Allentown event on Saturday October 20, 2007, from noon until 7 p.m. Held just one day only, Haunted Allentown features a host of entertaining experiences to welcome the myths and mysteries of the season.

Events Headquarters will be at the “Haunted” Hamlin House, 432 Franklin St. (between Virginia & Allen Sts.) with treats for the whole family. Wine tasting, warm cider, donuts, and more await, along with the opportunity to have a reading by some of the area’s top psychics including Cassandra Joan. With it’s Mansard roof, tall windows, stone porch and long, narrow hallway, Hamlin House has all the trappings of a Hollywood set for a ghost story. The main attraction will be a new twist on the popular Secrets of Allentown house tour that draws thousands of visitors each year. Haunted Allentown will offer self-Guided Haunted Walking Tours sites throughout the Historic District. Each location will feature interpreters that recount the site’s haunted history. Many of the sites will offer interior tours, while some will be “porch” tours only with an interpreter telling the ghoulish tales associated with the property. For those with their own ghosts at home who are looking for information on dealing with supernatural guests, one site will feature high-tech ghost-hunting demonstrations, given by the Ghosthunters of Rolling Hills. Naturally, there will be a total of thirteen sites to visit. For many people, the mention of the phrase ‘haunted house’, conjures images of an abandoned Victorian mansion whose occupants linger long after their demise. Association president Christopher N. Brown says. “Allentown is a
perfect backdrop to the supernatural stories and folklore that have developed over the neighborhood’s 150-year history”. “Allentown’s Victorian-era homes are authentically spooky, with soaring chimneys, glaring gargoyles, and witch’s hat turrets.” One particular neighborhood house has been informally referred to for decades as the ‘Addams Family house’ by locals and tourists alike for its remarkable resemblance to the home of Gomez and Morticia.

Paranormal talks will be held at Hamlin House each hour with topics such as “Buffalo’s Haunted Architecture”, given by Mason Winfield, “The Frontier’s Most Haunted Cemetery”, given by Rob Lockhart and “Halloween and Psychic Communication”, given by Ellen Bourn, president of the Lily Dale Association. Each visitor to Haunted Allentown will receive a beautiful, full-color booklet entitled The Streets of Allentown. This keepsake features descriptions of every street in the Allentown Historic District and some of the most significant historic and architecturally significant homes. The publication is lavishly illustrated with color photographs celebrating Allentown’s exceptional architecture. The booklets will be helpful during one of two guided walking tours given during the event, at 2 p.m. (featuring picturesque Irving Place and Park Street), and at 5 p.m. (highlighting Symphony Circle and Days Park). Tour attendees will learn that these beautiful neighborhoods were both built over former cemeteries and battlefields.

There is more!
Augmenting the events at Hamlin House will be a Haunted Courtyard at “Steel Crazy” on Allen Street at the corner of Elmwood Avenue. Participating Allentown merchants will offer tour attendees free or discounted access to other Allentown attractions including restaurants and retail stores. To ensure that the haunted ambiance permeates the entire neighborhood, residents throughout Allentown are getting in the “spirit” by participating in Allentown’s Spookiest House Contest. Tickets for Haunted Allentown are on sale now for only $10 (pre-sale) or $13 (day of event) at Positively Main Street (773 Elmwood Ave.), Quaker Bonnet Eatery (175 Allen St.), Steel Crazy (Allen St. at Elmwood Ave.), online at www.tickets.com or in person at Tickets.com outlets in all Tops Friendly Markets locations. Allentown Association members and children under 12 may receive a $2 discount on the day of the event only. Tickets may be purchased the day of the event at the Hamlin House, 432 Franklin Street. An additional charge applies for psychic readings.

This fun and unique event will showcase Allentown in a way that has never been done before, while supporting Allentown Association’s mission to preserve and promote the Allentown National Historic District in Buffalo..

So, I haven’t been keeping up to date, but here’s the low down on what we did during weeks 2 and 3 of the FBI Citizens’ Academy.

Week 2: We had a tour of the office…the coolest part was seeing the gun vault. We got to see several different types of guns, including a tommy gun…just like in the old gangster movies.

Inside the evidence room, we were able to see the rifle that James Kopp used to assassinate Dr. Barnett Slepian. It was eerie because it was a piece of WNY history…tragic history, of course.

The most interesting part of the evening was learning about the case against Robert Hanssen. You remember him…he was the government agent who sold spies to the Russians. He was ultimately caught and convicted. We also heard about Dr. Wenho Lee, another traitor who worked at one of the most top secret facilities the government runs…and he sold secrets…

Week 3: Two big cases. Local 91 Investigation. Operation Greenback. Fascinating stuff.

Local 91 involved said union in Niagara County and how they prevented construction from happening if builders and contractors would not utilize their union workers. As a former Niagara County resident, it explains why nothing was built in Lockport, including a planned Wegmans. It also explains why Niagara Falls has so many rundown buildings. With the absence of power in the union, hopefully Niagara Falls will see the resurgence that Lockport has seen the past few years.

Operation Greenback was the Buffalo Police Dept corruption case. Narcotics detectives buying and selling drugs. That’s the long and short of it. Seasoned detectives that had been on the force for at least 15 years each. Needless to say, it is not representative of the BPD in its entirety.

Want to find out first hand how the FBI works? Hear how the Bureau tracks down spies and terrorists? Learn how to collect and preserve evidence? See what it is like to fire a weapon and put yourself in the shoes of a Special Agent making a split-second, life-or-death decision?

If you are a leader in your community, you just might be able to do that and more––through an FBI Citizens’ Academy, open for business in all 56 of our field offices.

Who attends? Business, civic, and religious leaders, each nominated by a Bureau employee or a previous Academy graduate. You must be at least 21 years old (with no prior felony convictions) and must live and work in the area covered by the field office sponsoring the academy. Please note: Because classified techniques used in criminal and national security cases are discussed, nominees must undergo a background check and get an interim security clearance.

Who teaches? Special Agents in Charge of that field office, their senior managers and senior agent experts.

For how long? Classes generally meet 10 times (eight on weeknights and two on Saturday) for three hours each session. Each session has around 20-30 students.

The curriculum? Fascinating!

    * Practical problems involving evidence collection and preservation.
* FBI jurisdiction and congressional oversight.
* Structure and operation of FBI field offices and satellite agencies.
* Fingerprint, forensic, technology, training, and other services
* Policies and issues: ethics, discipline, communications, drug enforcement, civil rights, and future criminal trends.
* Firearms training.

I get to cool stuff. I count myself very lucky. I was fortunate to be nominated by a previous Academy graduate, accepted and last night I attended my first class.

We learned the history of the FBI and learned all about their recruitment process. As you can see above, each class will be really interesting..learning about local cases, including the James Kopp case.

Check back here every Friday for a recap of the previous night’s class!

What: Buffalo defending title as ‘Pierogi Pocket of America’

When: Sunday, Sept 9 12:30-2:30 (immediately after 11:30 mass)

Where: Sears St Athletic Center

Last year, Buffalo beat out Garfield, NJ; Lancaster, PA; Pittsburgh; and Providence, RI to win the first-ever designation of “Capital of the Pierogy Pocket of America” in a national contest sponsored by Mrs. T’s Pierogies. This year, the parishioners of Corpus Christi Church hope to defend the Queen City’s title, and at the same time, bring the “pierogi spotlight” back to the East Side with Buffalo’s biggest Pierogi Party.

Corpus Christi’s pastor, the Rev. Anzelm Chalupka, reflected that, “Corpus Christi has a long tradition not only as a place of worship, but as a place of community where men, women and children could gather every day of the week for a wide range of social and recreational activities. Women of the parish would often get together to cook meals, including pierogi, for these events. So it is fitting that the parish create an occasion to bring people together to share a home-made meal.”

Four varieties of pierogi, including cheese, sauerkraut, meat and potato, will be available for purchase, all home-made by the Corpus Christi parishioners. Parish council president Andy Golebiowski noted that, “Pierogi have been “made by hand and savored for centuries.” He expects the popularity of this mouth-watering meal to continue for many generations to come. Music will also be part of this celebration, and will feature a special pierogi song written by Rev. Chalupka.

All are welcome to attend to help Buffalo retain its rightful title as “Capital of the Pierogy Pocket of America” and show their “pierogi pride” for this hearty ethnic dish that is a year-round staple for Western New Yorkers.

WHAT: Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society to commemorate President Mckinley’s death

WHEN: Sunday, September 16, 2 PM

WHERE: Resource Center, 459 Forest Avenue, Buffalo (across from Richardson complex)

The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society will present “Hail to a Fallen Chief,” a commemoration of the death of President William McKinley, on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2:00 p.m. in its Resource Center, located at 459 Forest Avenue, across from the Richardson Complex.

The Historical Society’s collections manager, Melissa Wertman Brown, will speak about the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, a grand event that began as Buffalo’s greatest triumph and ended stained with the tragedy of a presidential assassination. To set the tone of this momentous time, the Hutchinson Family Revival singers will perform late 19th century popular and mourning songs in period attire.

Brown will lead visitors through the Resource Center’s Pan-American exhibit, explaining the circumstances that brought the massive event to Buffalo, the construction of its elaborate grounds and ornate buildings, the attractions of the midway, and the teardown and aftermath of the exposition structures.

However, the greatest attention of the afternoon will be given to the story of McKinley’s untimely demise. On Sept. 6, 1901, a young anarchist named Leon Czolgosz, carrying a pistol concealed in a handkerchief, fired two bullets at the president. Over the next eight days, Buffalo and the nation watched anxiously as McKinley’s health wavered until his death on Sept. 14, 1901.

Visitors will see the weapon Czolgosz used, learn about his lofty motives, discover the circumstances that affected the sophistication of medical attention McKinley received, and see the impact of the assassination on the exposition, Buffalo and the nation.

Admission is $8 for the general public and $6 for members of the Historical Society and may be purchased at the door. For more information, the public may call 873-9644 ext. 301.

When: Saturday September 8th, 2007 at 9PM
Where: Outside Squeaky Wheel, 712 Main St
Cost: Free

Join Squeaky Wheel for a free outdoor screening of a 16mm film print of DW Griffith’s epic “Intolerance” (1916) with a live score composed by local musician David Kane. “Intolerance” examines prejudices and their terrible effects through several time periods. In ancient Babylon, a mountain girl is caught up in the religious rivalry that leads to the city’s downfall. In Judea, Jesus Christ is crucified by the hypocritical Pharisees. In 1572 Paris, two young Huguenots prepare for marriage unaware of the impending St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. In 1919 America, social reformers destroy the lives of a young woman and her beloved.

The score, composed by David Kane, will be performed by David Kane and the Masters of None. Masters of None features David Kane on keyboards and electronics, Bill Sack on processed guitars with voice by Debra Segura.

David Kane has been a composer, musician and bandleader for over 25 years. Kane also composed a new score for Man With a Movie Camera, which premiered at the George Eastman House in Rochester, as well as composing soundtracks for current films Shadow Creature and In.

That’s what happened to me with the Viking Lobster Co. Nestled on Tonawanda Street, my first experience after it re-opened was not a great one. The service was extraordinarily slow and the food was not up to par. You should never have to cut lobster with a knife…but we did.

Yesterday, I was making plans with friends about where to go for dinner tonight. When one of my friends suggested Viking Lobster, I cringed. He knew I’d had a bad experience, but assured me that this time would be better. He happened to be there the night of said experience and has eaten there regularly ever since.

So, we went. We started with a round of appetizers. Lots of good food. Clams casino. Steamers. Ribs. Then we shared salad and soup. For dinner, we ordered a huge lobster and then a Viking Seafood Plate Special. Everything was great! The service was still a little on the slow side, but if you go into a place knowing what to expect, it makes things a lot easier.

A note from Michael Gainer:

First of all, to those that have already spent time on a job site, developing some aspect of our program, or planning an event…a heartfelt thank you! To those eager to get involved in building our organization for the future, we welcome your skills, talents, commitment, and passion.

It was our vision in creating Buffalo ReUse, that we would divert money currently spent on demolition into job creation and ultimately job training for youth ages 18 -24. This we will accomplish and our trained staff will be significant in meeting the terms of our research and development grant and provide a skilled workforce that can take on the task of deconstruction full-time. That being said, the scope of our work is wide and far reaching and with each passing day we learn of new areas in which our organization can be of service to the community. This is where your contributions, time, and energy come into play! For Buffalo ReUse is far more than just deconstruction, as our Program Manager Kevin Hayes says, “we’re about people.” He’s right and it is people like you that will help us to serve more needs here in the City of Buffalo, from developing a retail store to revitalizing communities through grassroots projects and organizing.

So here’s the big question, HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? What’s great is that there are needs in the organization for varying skills and abilities. We’re building an organization from scratch, so as you can imagine there is a lot of work to do. Here’s a list of a few opportunities for which you can be involved.

MARKETING COMMITTEE. Wow! This is a biggie! It’s critical that we get the word out to the Buffalo community and surrounding areas so folks know that they can access our services. Caesandra will be providing leadership for this committee and has already started the ball rolling on blogs, myspace pages, and youtube videos…there’s an immense potential here, not to mention improving and expanding our website capacity. Are you a WRITER or DESIGNER? We’re developing promotional literature to spread the word of our work to contractors and homeowners. Maybe you’ve seen our recent articles in the Buffalo News or ArtVoice. We’d like to cast the net further and get more stories written in more papers…letters to the editor, press releases, or feature stories, are all ways to get free publicity in papers. If video production, editing, design, writing, radio, etc. is your interest… send an email to Caesandra at marketing@buffaloreuse.org . I know she’s wanting to convene a meeting soon, so send her a line ASAP.

FIELD SERVICES. Strong back? Like getting dirty? Skilled or unskilled, we’ll prepare you for the job. We have tools, hardhats, gloves, and masks to get you going. It’s great if you have workboots, because sometimes the working conditions are extreme. Right now we have a lot of projects in the works and often get calls for salvage and pickups. The volume isn’t heavy right now, but I anticipate it will be picking up soon. Send an email to field@buffaloreuse.org , with your phone number and the days and times your available. I’ll make sure you’re informed of upcoming work when it’s available.

RETAIL and SALES. SOON…not soon enough, we’ll be making a move to a larger warehouse that will eventually be our retail store. So much is about presentation and organization. We don’t want to be JUST a store, we want to be a destination. That means our store will incorporate art, history, architecture, and community. If you have an eye for aesthetic presentation, a knack for organization, or an interest in unique materials, we’d love to have you involved in either organizing, staffing, or developing our store. Kevin is the go-to guy for this work. Right now we’re open on Sunday’s from 11-4 p.m. and that’s a great time to plug in, just stop by, but we’re also working on the layout and design for our new space so we’ll need to put heads together to work out a plan. Send an email to retail@buffaloreuse.org and Kevin will be in touch.

Here are some other very specific things that we will need help with in the short term. Send an email to info@buffaloreuse.org indicating what you’d like to work on and we’ll meet-up and help get the ball rolling. These projects completed by individuals or in small teams. Check out volunteer link for other volunteer ideas. Here are a few thoughts…

EDUCATORS. Assist in developing a job training curriculum guide.
COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS. Community resource manual to assist neighborhoods/block clubs.
SAFETY TRAINERS. We would love your expertise and support.
DOCUMENTARIAN. Organizing print materials, video documentation, photos, etc for future fund-raising, etc.

And one last thing, there’s something about start-ups, sometimes they drop the ball. If you don’t feel like we’re using your skills wisely or following up with you regularly enough, call us or email. We have volunteers that call regularly and check in and typically we find ways for them to contribute. Stay in touch, visit our store, get involved. So look forward to working with all of you.

Onward,

This year’s Brew Fest will include over 100 samples of microbrews from around the world and promises to be an even greater success with more than 3,000 “tasters” in attendance. Event organizers have worked hard to make sure this year’s event is safe, fun and enjoyable, so as promised, there will be more bathrooms, more food, more brewers, and more everything!

Tickets to the event are $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door. Admission price includes a souvenir glass and 20 tokens to taste and enjoy microbrews from more than 40 regional brewers. Get your tickets online now or stop by Wegmans, Flying Bison Brewery, Alternative Brews, Buffalo Brew Pub, Pizza Plant, Niagara Tradition, Premier Gourmet or Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center.
*Note that my friend Ethan over at Beer-o-vision posted on this last week (sorry Ethan!), noting that it will definitely sell out!

Last year’s event sold out (I know, I was in line and was turned away), so get your tickets today!

Today, a press conference was held to introduce the UBbelievers group. The press conference began with Madison, a five-year old girl, who will be 18 in the year 2020. 2020 happens to also be the target year of UB’s development plan. Members of the community were also there to tell their UB story. Among them were Jeremy Jacobs Sr., Delaware North and Chair of the UB Council, David Barthel, President & CEO of SmartPill and Geraldine Horton, Principal of East High School.

As I mentioned in a previous post, 40% growth is planned between now and 2020. That growth includes adding almost 3,000 faculty and staff (750 faculty), more than doubling the research expenditures in the community to $300 million dollars (from the current $137) and increasing the student body by 10,000 students.

It was great to see so many members of the community (and UB) there to support this project. If you are interested in learning more about this, click here.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I like the Empire Grill. I have a few friends who haven’t had the best experiences there, but I continue to patronize the place because the food and service are almost always very good. One of the great things about this restaurant is that it’s wireless…or it’s supposed to be.

This morning, I had a breakfast meeting there and I needed wireless for the meeting. I got there before my friend and was disappointed to discover that yes they have wireless, but nobody on staff knew what the security code was. I was irritated in fact. The person I talked to said that nobody there knew and that most requests for wireless didn’t come until the afternoon. So, I walked out and called my friend. We went down to Spot Elmwood, where wireless is also unavailable (but available at Spot Delaware). We decided to make due without wireless and wrapped up our meeting.

The point being that I like Empire Grill, but it was not customer friendly to my needs this morning, which was disappointing for me…

During the summer, there are always a million things to do. Festivals, concerts, you name it, and we have it. One of my favorite events to attend during the summer is always the Italian Festival. It’s always the weekend around the 13th or 14th of July and a great celebration of Italian heritage in Buffalo.

Last night, I went down with friends to see what the offerings were. I have two food items I ALWAYS get every year. I always get Louie’s pizza because there is no Louie’s pizza locally. Louie’s travels from festival to festival, so I can only get their pizza once a year. My other favorite food to get at the festival is the Hot Pepper Roll from Molinaro’s. Molinaro’s is a family-owned business out of Lockport and I like to support it because a) the food is great and b) I grew up with the Molinaro family. I’d heard a rumor that they would not be attending the festival this year, but I was delighted to find them, closer to the main area than usual. I bought one of the hot pepper rolls - a hot banana pepper stuffed with ricotta cheese and sausage and then deep-fried in breading - and it did not disappoint. It was hotter than I remember, but still delicious! The music is always festive for the weekend and I was glad to run into some old friends while walking around.

New this year was the Tiki Bar at Romeo & Juliet’s. Normally, R&J’s is closed during the festival. They decided to try something different this year and stay open as well as sell drinks. A great idea! It was packed when we stopped in for some sangria (yum!) and to check things out. They said they decided to see how things went and what the feedback would be and maybe make things bigger and better next year. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves!

So, head on down because you’ll never have the choices of great Italian food, desserts and entertainments than you do at the Italian Festival!

In the midst of our celebrations, we often forget the important of July 4th and what it truly means. A day to celebrate with those we love. A day to gather and picnic and relax. But more importantly, it’s a day of reflection. It’s a day to remember the freedoms we have and be grateful to those who have sacrificed so that we can enjoy those freedoms.

Last night, I went with friends to the Bison’s game, where there was a beautiful tribute to the military…it’s something they do every year…and every year I find myself getting emotional. They recognize members of the service, retired and active. They also recognize the family members of service members and I happen to be one of them.

My brother re-enlisted in the Army last November. He’d served 5 1/2 years previously and was just compelled to re-join. He told me in a conversation we had late last year that he wants to fight as long as he still has military brothers and sisters overseas. And while it’s something I cannot understand, I admire and respect and love him for it. I couldn’t be prouder of him than I am right now.

Thanks Jonathan…and Anthony…and Joel…and all the other men and women…

So, take a moment and reflect on those that have given the ultimate sacrifice…

More good news…

-According to a recent study done by Americans for the Arts, the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry in Erie and Niagara Counties totals $155.29 million. The $155 million consists of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and event related spending by their audiences. The arts and culture industry supports 4, 740 full-time equivalent jobs, generates $95.9 million in household income to local residents and delivers $24 million in local and state government revenue from taxes (income, property, sales) and fees. The study can be viewed at www.erie.gov/regionalcoalition.

-In the first half of this year, Kaleida Health has hired 252 nurses. 177 of Kaleida’s new hires are recent graduates from local schools. The Catholic Health System has hired 149 nurses. Bonuses from $5,000 to $10,000 are being offered to new hires willing to make a four-year commitment to hard-to-fill positions.

-Moog, an East Aurora based Space and Defense contractor, is undergoing a $6 million expansion of their facility that is expected to create 70 engineering positions. Moog employs 2,300 workers in East Aurora.

-Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems located on Wehrle Drive in Amherst is adding 40 jobs over the next year. The company, which provides weapons systems modernization programs to the Pentagon and other national security agencies employs 450 people.

Okay, it’s not really even summer yet, but everyone’s schedules are already packed with activities! Last night, I joined a few friends at Bacchus for their Summer Film Series. Every Wednesday, they show a film on their back patio – weather permitting – and it starts around dark. It’s a great way to spend a Wednesday night, especially for those craving the weekend.

“The Big Lebowski” was the movie Wednesday night, and if you haven’t seen it, it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. There’s something about a bowling movie, which really isn’t a bowling movie, whose main character calls himself The Dude. In any event, the patio was packed last night, standing room only as it turned out.

My friends and I had some wine and snacks and enjoyed another beautiful Buffalo night. I can’t imagine anything better than that! Get there early…tables go fast!

Here’s the lineup for the rest of the summer:
•	June 20 The Godfather
•	June 27 Dazed and Confused
•	July 4 No Movie
•	July 11 Run Lola Run
•	July 18 Clerks
•	July 25 The Shining
•	August 1 The Fifth Element
•	August 8 The Graduate
•	August 15 Raising Arizona
•	August 22 American Psycho
•	August 29 Blue Velvet
•	September 5	The Princess Bride

Did You Know?
By Paul Wolf, Esq.

*Employee shortage - There is always a lot of concern expressed about the shortage
of jobs in WNY. According to a recent Business First article, area life sciences
companies are having a difficult time recruiting technicians to assist researchers.
Hundreds of positions are projected to be needed in coming years. Gaymar Industries
in Orchard Park is looking for 20 technicians with associate degrees. Startup
company PersonaDX is looking for 5 lab technicians and 100 in two years, maybe
sooner. Kaleida Health has 440 openings for lab positions. Area colleges are
seeking to address the demand by beefing up programs and attracting student
interest in the field. The problem is a national issue as across the country, 44
percent of laboratories are experiencing difficulty in hiring lab personnel.

*Bear Metal a steel fabricator started in 1999 and located in Buffalo has recently
expanded. The company, which was located in a 5,000 square foot building, recently
moved to a 15,500 square foot building. Employment will be increasing from 6
employees to 10 to handle an increased workload and sales are projected to increase
from $500,000 to $1 million. One of the problems faced by the growing company
according to founder Barrett Price is finding qualified welders. Price has had to
look to Alfred State College Welder’s Training School in Wellsville for workers.

*Hauptman-Woodward located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus with a staff of
79, has the second largest concentration of structural biologists in the country.

*Block Club, a new free bi-monthly, full color magazine recently released its
first issue. The magazine started by 20-year-old Patrick Finan is called Block Club
to reflect Western New York’s strong sense of community. The magazine, which is
aimed at a wide audience will spotlight locally based businesses. 20,000 copies of
the free magazine are being distributed at locations on Elmwood, Hertel and Main
Street.

What: “Bizarre Bazaar” Fundraiser for the 2007 Buffalo Infringement Festival
When: Saturday, June 16, 2007 from 8 p.m. till quite late
Where: Soundlab, 110 Pearl St., Buffalo, NY (www.bigorbitgallery.org)
How much: suggested donation $5 and up (tickets at the door only; no advance sale)

MORE THAN A DOZEN ARTISTS + ONE INDOOR GARAGE SALE = “BIZARRE BAZAAR”, A FUNDRAISER FOR BUFFALO’S THIRD ANNUAL “INFRINGEMENT” FESTIVAL, SATURDAY, JUNE 16 AT SOUNDLAB

The 2007 Buffalo Infringement Festival is just around the corner (July 26-August 5) and the infringing has already begun! On Saturday, June 16, 2007, join a motley gang of musicians, comics, actors, media artists, and other rogue spirits at Soundlab (110 Pearl St.) for a wild night of fun and fundraising.

Like the festival itself, the benefit will feature a wide range of artists working in many genres and media, all of them “under the radar” in one way or another. The action-packed lineup includes music by Baby Machines, Draconians, Laura Jean and Friends, Ramforkinus, Drivers to Warsaw, and Jack Toft and the Vegetables; theater and performance by Alemaedae Theatre Productions, Caesandra, The Rated-R Rockstar Josh Smith, and Kathleen Foster; and short films and videos by Scott Andrew Kurchak, Ron Ehmke, Andrew Michalski, and Morphine Heart Productions.

As if the action onstage weren’t enough, this “Bizarre Bazaar” will feature an assortment of (truly odd) odds and ends. Call it a Chinese auction, an indoor garage sale, or anything else you like: we call it a great way to walk away with some weird stuff at bargain-basement prices. Want to play it safer? There’s also a 50/50 raffle, guaranteeing some lucky so-and-so will score some cold, hard cash.

The festivities begin at 8 p.m. and continue until the last weary audience member leaves the room, begging for more—all this in exchange for a donation to the festival. (We’re asking folks to cough up a mere five bucks, more if they can afford it.)

For more information on the fundraiser and the festival, click here.
